I, K.Gopalsamy, had been heading the Neem Seed procurement department of Tata Oil Mills Company Ltd (1990-1995) and E.I.D Parry India Ltd(1995-2011). Over the years, I have played a vital role in motivating and educating the neem seed pickers in the rural areas of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Due to suitable climatic conditions in these areas, it was easy to de-pulp Neem seed from Neem fruit and good quality and stability of Aza content compared to North India where there was low Aza content due to climatic conditions. Also, Aza content and quality in southern areas was more suitable for Aza manufacturers. Aza manufacturing companies from North focused more on South India based raw materials only.
Neem cake and Neem Oil was primarily produced from Neem seeds and fruits before 1990. Neem cake was predominantly used as an organic fertilizer while Neem oil is used for natural soaps.
After 1990, decade-long research breakthrough from foreign countries led to the invention of Neem technical powder(Azadirachtin) from Neem seedwhich attracted more companies in this sector. Then, major companies focused on the raw material for own requirements. During the 27-year period till 2017, pickers concentrated more on the quality of raw material and there were no major changes in climatic conditions. After 2018, there was a huge competition for raw material due to high demand of Aza powder for export and Neem oil urea coating purpose in India, leading to a scarcity of raw materials. This led to a decline in the quality of raw materials due to various factors. The last 5 years saw a huge fluctuation in price of raw material vs Neem technical powder in the world market. The arrival of raw material seems to be on the positive side this year (2024) for Aza manufacturers. All major industries look out for a healthy growth.
