Neem Cake & Oil – Manufacturing Process from Neem Seeds
The manufacturing process involves the following steps:
- Procurement of quality neem seeds from the market and vendors
- Pre-cleaning
- Decortication
- Cold-pressed expelling operation
1. Procurement of Quality Neem Seeds
Quality neem seeds free from fungus and impurities — with low fruit content, controlled moisture, and minimal admixtures (dust, twigs, etc.) — are selected and procured from both market sources and trusted vendors.
2. Pre-Cleaning
The seeds are thoroughly washed to remove sand and fine dust, then solar-dried to reach the
required moisture level.
After drying, the seeds pass through:
- fruit separator — removes remaining fruit
- magnetic separator — removes metal particles
- de-stoner — removes stones and heavy impurities
3. Decortication
The seeds are broken into shell and kernel. Through winnowing, neem husk is separated and bagged, while kernels move forward for oil extraction.
4. Cold-Pressed Expelling
Clean kernels are fed into rotary expellers where RPM is controlled to avoid heat buildup.Neem oil is collected and stored for filtration, while neem cake flakes are cooled and bagged.
Flow Chart
Flow chart for neem cake and neem oil processing from raw neem seeds. Before 1990, neem cake and neem oil were mainly produced from neem seeds and fruits.Neem cake was used primarily as organic fertilizer, while neem oil was used in natural soap production.
